How long until I know if my marketing is working?
A founder asked us this recently: "What's the minimum amount of time before we know if this strategy works or not?"
We love that question, because it means they're thinking about risk the right way.
The honest answer: you'll see early signals in a few weeks, get a real answer in a few months, and the results compound after that.
Don't grade month one by month-six standards.
The three windows
Weeks 1 to 4: learning
The platforms are testing audiences and creative. Your cost per lead is going to bounce around. Don't panic. We're watching which messages people respond to, not whether it's profitable yet.
Months 2 to 3: signal
The winners start to show up. Costs settle down. Now we can ask the better question: are these the right leads?
Month 3 and on: scale
We put more behind what's working and start measuring payback against real revenue.
Sometimes the work starts before the sale
Sometimes the most important weeks happen before anything is for sale. When we launched Wrights of Passage, a limited run of 350 watches, we spent the runway building anticipation first: teasers in aviation communities, an enter-to-win contest, an email series that told the story in chapters. By launch day, nobody was cold traffic. The watches didn't feel scarce so much as spoken for.
And the compounding part is real. With Epic Will, we were adding about 500 email subscribers a week through targeted campaigns. Over a year, the email program drove a 65% increase in revenue, on a tight budget. None of that shows up in week two. It shows up because you kept going.
What speeds it up
- Enough budget to learn. If the budget's too small, the platform never gets enough data, and the learning phase drags on.
- A clear offer. "Book a tour" or "pre-order now" beats "learn more" every time.
- Tracking before launch. If you can't see which ad led to which sale, you'll never know when you broke even.
Agree on the scorecard first
Before a single dollar goes out, we want to agree on what success looks like at 30, 60, and 90 days.
Maybe it's cost per lead in week four. Lead quality in month two. Return on ad spend in month three.
That keeps everybody honest. Including us.
If you're about to sign with any agency, ask them for that scorecard first. In our Agency of Record partnerships, weeks 1 to 3 are discovery, weeks 4 to 12 are the foundation and first launches, and the ongoing rhythm starts in month 4. Every week you get a short report on spend, results, and next actions. If you want to see how we'd build yours, start a conversation.
