What actually happens in brand discovery (and why it takes 4 to 6 weeks)
"Walk me through your process."
We hear that a lot. Usually right before someone asks if we can do it in a week.
Our discovery takes about four to six weeks. One thing surprises people: whether we start tomorrow or at the top of next quarter, the timeline is about the same. It's not something you can cram. Discovery is the first stretch of our eight-week Brand Sprint, which then turns what we learn into your visual identity.
What happens in those weeks
1. We talk to leadership
We sit down with your executive team, almost like an internal focus group. Where are you going? What do you believe? And where do you not agree? That last one matters more than people think.
2. We listen to your people and your customers
The folks closest to the work often describe the brand better than leadership does. Their words end up being some of the best raw material we have.
That's exactly what happened with Insurance Group of America. After interviews across leadership and staff, it was obvious they weren't a standard insurance company. Four values kept coming up: Guts, Resilience, Integrity, and Tenacity. We named it GRIT. Their recruiting stopped sounding like generic hiring copy and started sounding like them. We didn't invent that. We just listened long enough to hear it.
3. We look at the market
What's everyone else in your space saying? Mostly so we can make sure you don't sound like them.
4. We write it down
Positioning. Who you're for. Your messaging pillars. Your story. All in plain language your whole team can repeat.
5. We scope what's next
In a Brand Sprint, that's your logo, colors, and type, plus simple guidelines your team can use. After that, the website, campaigns, and content are based on what we found, not on what we guessed on the first call.
Why not one week?
Getting time on a leadership team's calendar takes time. Letting what you heard sit long enough to see the pattern takes time.
When we see a one-week "discovery," it usually means somebody skipped the listening and jumped straight to design.
What you walk away with
- A shared answer to "who are we, and why should anyone care?"
- Every logo, page, and ad after that has something to be measured against.
You can see each step on our Process page, or start a conversation and we'll scope it for your team.
